The-art-of-the-post

You would think that creating posts for your business is a simple matter of banging out a few words, slapping on an image, hitting “Post” and calling it a day.

Well, as they say, “Clothes maketh the man”, and your posts are very much about what you ‘wear’ out and how you present yourself to your audience. The truth is, in today’s attention-deficit society, it would take a lot to stop a user from thumbing past your post and taking notice of your company. Simply put, the posts matter in your marketing.

And equally as important, like choosing your OOTD, your posts very much reflect your personality, so spending a little more time crafting the content that you put out goes a long way in branding your company the way you want it, and cementing your company’s persona in the minds of your audience.

So how do you create posts that amplify your branding and help you stand out amidst all the digital marketing competition from other businesses? Here are 5 tips to get you started.

  1. Be Concise with Content

Before you think about how to speak, think about what to say. The subject of your posts matter in the way you’re trying to portray yourself.

Are you a tech or hardware company, and you wish to paint yourself as a subject expert in your industry? Consider tips posts, product reviews and even unboxing videos. Dealing in food? Think about making stylised recipe videos, or going live and doing a taste test in a restaurant.

The key thing is letting your audience know what kind of content to expect from you. When they’re coming to you for advice, or just to look at gorgeous pictures of food, you know you’re doing something right. Planning a good content calendar is key to providing that consistency and quality in your content.

  1. Speak Right

Think of your social media account as a person. How do you want this person to talk to your customers? If your business is in books, your persona could be a friendly, enthusiastic bookworm who’s eager to share his latest reads to customers. Or maybe you’re a fashion blogshop – then perhaps you’re someone who just has that instinct in scoring sweet swags.

With your desired persona all that in mind, bring out your digital copywriting skills and start manifesting these personalities into words. Think about the lingo, the habitual phrases, the buzzwords – and “speak” it all out into your post in a natural, organic manner.

  1. Look Right

We humans are visual creatures, and it goes without saying that your posts have to look the part by not just being visually engaging, but also true to your branding. Ensure that your visuals find synergy with your content and tone of voice (or vice versa), and let’s face it – if your visuals are not pretty, people won’t look at it, so consider investing in high-quality photography or graphics.

Videos are a great tool to bring in eyeballs as well. With videos being one of the most consumed content online, they are a great way to engage your audience. Keep them short and captivating to hold audiences’ attention all the way to the end of your video.

And remember, good branding is about consistency, so make sure your colours and style persist (within a certain degree) throughout your posts.

  1. Timing, Timing, Timing

Obviously, posting at 2am when everyone is sleeping isn’t going to get you traction. Unless, of course, your target audience are night owls. Do your research and find out when your audience is the most active online. From there, you can plan around your content calendar and schedule your posts to appear when there are the most users present. There are a variety of analytic tools out there to learn the habits of the people you’re reaching out to.

  1. Medium Matters

You may ask yourself these questions: which social media platform should I get into? How many? How do I behave on each of them?

There are tons of social media platforms out there, with some of the more mainstream ones being Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, just to name a few. Up-and-comers like XiaoHongShu are raising eyebrows as well.

It helps to study up and understand the audience base of each platform. Facebook, the de-facto pioneer of social media, sees usage mainly from millennials and baby boomers, whereas Instagram and TikTok are mostly enjoyed by Gen-Zs and the younger Gen X-ers. So pick your platform where your audience exists, and tailor your language according to the platform.
